chess FOR JUNIORS
Thinking ahead... A Sussex Junior Chess event
The club provides a welcoming and safe environment for players of all ages and abilities.
Juniors are actively encouraged to participate fully in the club. Beginners will be given help to learn and develop their game so they can enter and thrive in competitive play. We can offer advice about playing the best moves, how you record games, use of a chess clock etc
We have a broad-ranging mix of ability, young and old, so members, even beginners, will be assured of a good game. A number of tournaments are run throughout the year and juniors are encouraged to take part.
In the past year, the club has seen a significant rise in the number of juniors joining - creating an environment in which youngsters can thrive and really enjoy their chess.
There will also be the opportunity, when older, to participate in matches against other clubs.
Membership for under 18s is currently only £27.50 a year, less if joining during the season, which runs from September. All members, including juniors, will be expected to join the English Chess Federation, which brings a number of benefits, including having games “graded”.
Full details on ECF membership are available here: https://www.englishchess.org.uk/ecf-membership-rates-and-joining-details/
Grading means you get points for winning, drawing and sometimes for losing. The grades are not everything, but they are a reward and also, over time, a measure of performance and improvement.
Junior Silver membership is currently available FREE to junior players who have not previously been members of the federation in any category. When you log in as a new member at https://ecf.justgo.com, choose ‘Free Junior Silver’, and make sure you complete the process, as although no money changes hands, the membership must still be ‘purchased’ or it is not valid.
The club opens at around 7pm on a Friday. We play at The Bognor Club in Sudley Road - just ring the buzzer and someone will let you in. There is on-the-road parking and a free-in-the-evenings car park nearby.
A small library of chess books is available for all members to browse and borrow.
A condition of under-18 membership is that a parent must be in attendance with their son/daughter. There is plenty of comfortable seating with facilities for buying hot and cold drinks.
Sussex is one of the strongest counties in the UK for junior chess and its teams are regular winners in national competitions. Sussex Junior Chess https://sussexjuniorchess.org is a not for profit organisation run by volunteers which exists to promote and popularise chess among school-age children in the county.

Child protection
Bognor and Arun Chess Club offers a safe and welcoming environment for all players, including children and young adults. We operate a Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy in line with that of the English Chess Federation. Supervision of those aged under 18 is the responsibility of parents/guardians and the club expects each junior to be accompanied during club evenings by a parent/guardian. Full details of the Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy can be found here:
