The article below first appeared in an edition of Chess Nuts, a publication which Keith Davies helped put together some years ago.
The Abdicatalan A revolutionary opening devised going through a swing door into another world…… YOU can ABDICATE with ANY colour ... YOU WILL be surprised with the result . The secret is in the way you ignore your opponents reaction … and the noise made as he or she falls off his or her chair .... also watch the expressions of any spectators The inventor of this ultra modern system has already changed his name and address to avoid the begging letters that are bound to appear as a result of his genius... So why don't you forget everything anyone ever taught you about how to open a game of Chess and Abdicate .... it is so EASY I
Surely you have got the idea by now! All these variations are making my head hurt.
The success of this opening is often due to your opponent completely overestimating his/her ability to wipe you out quickly with sacrifices and sloppy play. If you are lucky enough to be playing someone who is extremely cautious ( or very weak) you will be amazed with the success of this opening. If you are unlucky enough to be playing another Abdicator the you could be in for a a very difficult game. Computer did not like your d3 or Bg5 and exchange so after 6 moves you were -0.67. I should have got in Be6 earlier - move 10? h6 and a6 slowed my responses. After 12 moves we were absolutely equal. ( My b5 possibly wasted a move.) My 15 c5 was 'wrong' . cxd and after exd Qb7 gave me +.5. 16. I should have played Bg5. C says +0.61 then ( Qa7 was far too artificial). 17.¥g4 ¥g5 18.¥xc8 ¦axc8 19.¤f5 ¥xc1 After your 19 Nf5, Computer ( = C from now on) gives three options -NONE of them was Bxc1! though each of them was minus for white: g6= -.84 Ne3 c4 and pressure Kh7= -.34 Kh8= - .44 where you go Rc2 and I do g6 SO, my rook take is wrong!!!! After Qxc1 we are absolutely equal and after f6. Then C recommends f4 for you with +.76. [...] 1.e4 c5 2.♘c3 d6 3.♘f3 ♘c6 4.d4 I am not well versed in the theory or nuances of the Open Sicilian but at least an interesting game is almost guaranteed. 4...cxd4 5.♘xd4 ♘f6 6.♗e3 6.Bg5 and 6.Bc4 are very theoretical options here. 6...a6 7.♗e2 7.f3 with Qd2 - the English attack - is another way to go. 7...♗d7 8.O-O ♘xd4 8...e6 would give black the solid Scheveningen structure. 9.♕xd4 e5 This stops white playing e5 himself, which could be dangerous when black is not castled. 10.♕d2 ♗c6 11.♗g5 h6 A key moment.
