DECEMBER 20: Jaimie Wilson won the club's Blitz tournament after a tie-break win against Sidhanth Pai, with whom he had finished equal first. Many thanks to Jaimie for running this tournament with such calm assurance! A reminder that the club is now closed for Christmas and the new year, resuming on January 10.

But they came up against tough opposition, with the home side fielding two 2100s. NOVEMBER 20: We are once again going to be holding a blitz tournament just before Christmas, which Jaimie Wilson has agreed to run. We would ask anyone interested in playing to be at the club by 7pm so pairings can be arranged. The tournament will take place on December 20 and consist of five 5 minute + 5 second increment games and should be a lot of fun.

SEPTEMBER 23: Many congratulations to Sidhanth Pai, who came joint fourth in the national 2024 Delancey UKCC Challengers, Under 12, at Northampton, with 6/9 in a strong field, an amazing achievement. Details.

SEPTEMBER 6: The club's Knockout tournament final will be between Jaimie Wilson and Luigi Caste. Jaimie defeated Sidhanth Pai and Luigi overcame Joe Pettitt in their respective semi-finals.
SEPTEMBER 3: Jaimie Wilson continued his unbeaten run when he took on Bognor players in a simul following the club's annual meeting. He finished with a 6-1 score, winning all but two games, which he drew against Peter Christmas and Mick Plumb.

MAY 6: It was a weekend to remember for young Andrew Xue, who has qualified for the 2024 Giga-finals, which will take place at Esher on July 20-21. Andrew booked his place with an impressive 4/6 score in the Mega-finals in Britain’s largest junior chess competition.
MAY 2: On Saturday, June 8, 10am-12 noon, as part of the East Preston village festival, Bognor and Arun Chess Club will be holding its annual chess challenge, when visitors can take on members of the club and play some friendly chess, hopefully outdoors if the weather permits. It takes place at The Tudor Tavern, 138-140 Sea Road, East Preston, BN16 1NN. It’s a very friendly atmosphere and drinks, including coffee, will be available at the bar. There are lots of village festival events on during the day for those who may be interested in staying on: https://www.eastprestonfestival.co.uk The event will take place outside, if the weather’s ok, but inside if wet.

FEBRUARY 8: Sad news to report that John Kalber, a long-serving member of the chess club, up to a year ago, has died. John was previously a member of Rustington Chess Club for many years until it stopped running. Those of us who remember John would have regarded him as a doughty opponent, who had a pretty high grade in his heyday, still with the ability to overcome stronger players with many a trick or two up his sleeve. Sadly, John was not in the best of health in recent times but despite being aged over 90 was more than capable of giving any opponent a strong game.
