JUNE 18: It was a tough match to end the season for Chichester B/Bognor in the Cole Cup Plate final, Emsworth winning 4.5-.5. Captain Mike Spence said the games were much closer than the score suggested. JUNE 4: Bognor and Arun Chess Club have won The Paul Watson Trophy this season, defeating Lewes on board count in a tense match. MAY 20: Captain Mike Spence has successfully navigated the combined Chichester/Bognor B team to the second division title in the Portsmouth League, thanks to a final game 3-2 victory over Cosham B. Results: 1 N Gyorke 0-1 W Grummitt; 2 T Howeson 1-0 M Atkinson; 3 S Smith 1-0 P Mc Evoy; 4 M Spence 0-1 P Jackson; 5 C Squires 1-0 C Harris. Table
MAY 8: This year's summer tournament is now underway - full details: Summer tournament. Players are rewarded with extra points for achieving success against stronger opponents.
MAY 6: It was a weekend to remember for young Andrew Xue, who has qualified for the 2024 Giga-finals, which will take place at Esher on July 20-21. Andrew booked his place with an impressive 4/6 score in the Mega-finals in Britain’s largest junior chess competition.
MAY 2: On Saturday, June 8, 10am-12 noon, as part of the East Preston village festival, Bognor and Arun Chess Club will be holding its annual chess challenge, when visitors can take on members of the club and play some friendly chess, hopefully outdoors if the weather permits. It takes place at The Tudor Tavern, 138-140 Sea Road, East Preston, BN16 1NN. It’s a very friendly atmosphere and drinks, including coffee, will be available at the bar. There are lots of village festival events on during the day for those who may be interested in staying on: https://www.eastprestonfestival.co.uk The event will take place outside, if the weather’s ok, but inside if wet.

3: Mike Spence 1/2 - 1/2 Adrian Waldock; 4: Sidhanth Pai 1 - 0 Robert Wall.
APRIL 16: Chichester/Bognor B go into their last fixture of the season top of division two thanks to a vital 3.5-1.5 victory at Fareham C. Results: T Philidor 0-1 N Gyorke; D Elliott 1/2-1/2 L Osiyemi; J Mc Burnie 0-1 S Coe; A Syed 1-0 M Plumb; A Trandafir 0-1 M Spence. The result puts us level with Fareham C, both with one match to play. We are plus 2 on aggregate. Fareham C go first to Portsmouth B, so Chichester/Bognor B will know exactly what they need to win by in their remaining home match v Cosham B in May. Table

FEBRUARY 8: Sad news to report that John Kalber, a long-serving member of the chess club, up to a year ago, has died. John was previously a member of Rustington Chess Club for many years until it stopped running. Those of us who remember John would have regarded him as a doughty opponent, who had a pretty high grade in his heyday, still with the ability to overcome stronger players with many a trick or two up his sleeve. Sadly, John was not in the best of health in recent times but despite being aged over 90 was more than capable of giving any opponent a strong game.
