DECEMBER 12: The club holds its pre-Christmas Blitz tournament on Friday (December 16) organised by Jamie Wood and Tracey Holmes. It's a Swiss tournament which means everyone gets five games, and if you lose a couple then you can expect easier opponents after that. The results are not sent to ECF for grading.

The tournament, being run by Jamie Wood, with help from Tracey Holmes, will consist of five rounds of 5 mins + 5sec increment games. OCTOBER 15: The Club Championship is underway! The first few games have been played and a chart with results can be viewed here. Colours for all games are shown too. Players are encouraged to book games in advance of club evenings to avoid missing out on a game on the night.

OCTOBER 10: Alan Matthews and Adam Holmes participated in the Fareham Chess Congress at the weekend - Alan won two and drew one of his six games; Adam drew and lost, playing two games on the Saturday.

OCTOBER 9: Adam Holmes has been presented with the club's Most Improved Player award for his performances at the club throughout the past season and for his prize-winning achievements at external tournaments. SEPTEMBER 26: The club's annual meeting and presentations ceremony takes place at The Bognor Club on Friday, September 30, when plans for the forthcoming season are discussed. The evening will conclude with a simul against club champion Jaimie Wilson. His Knockout Final win against Mike Spence can be played through here
SEPTEMBER 20: Jamie Wood has very kindly, and methodically, transcribed the list of previous holders of the Knockout tournament, stretching back to 1948. Older members will recall many familiar names from the past, including Mandy Hepworth, Reg Jackson, a former secretary, and the two Christmases - Peter and Paul. Some of the names are a bit unclear - and there is also a "doubling up" for 1984 so if anyone spots any errors let us know so they can be corrected. Honours board

SEPTEMBER 3: Jaimie Wilson has clinched the "club double", defeating Mike Spence in the club's Knockout Tournament. This followed his 100% 17/17 success in the club championship, which clinched him the title.

JUNE 28: The first few games have been played in the club's Summer Tournament, being run by Jaimie Wilson. Players will be rewarded with points according to the quality of their opponent. Games will count for grading. Details
JUNE 21: Bognor players Jaimie Wilson, Mike Spence, Rob Harrison and Adam Holmes helped make up a Chichster/Bognor select team which played Fareham - Southampton League champions v Portsmouth League winners. But the team found the going tough, going down 10-2. Mike salvaged a point against Ted Black.
JUNE 4: The club's East Preston Festival Chess Challenge was back ... after a three-year absence due to Covid. Club members Jaimie Wilson, Bill Partridge, Adam Raphael Holmes and Mike Spence hosted visitors to the Tudor Tavern, together with Chichester Chess Club chairman Steve Smith. Also joining the fun were former Bognor members Celia Buckley and Terry Peffer. Seven boards were kept busy throughout the morning. MAY 29: This coming Saturday, the club is holding its popular chess challenge as part of East Preston Festival. It's the chance for members of the public to take us on at chess. It's at a new venue this year, the Tutor Tavern, 138-140 Sea Rd, East Preston, BN16 1NN. The evn on Saturday, June 4, between 10am and 12 noon. We’ve got the courtyard out front but if the weather takes a turn for the worse, we can either go inside or utilise the back garden, which is under cover. There’s usually free on-road parking spaces and a car park opposite. It’s has been plenty of fun in the past so make a note of it in your diary!
MAY 22: The club’s juniors did Bognor and Arun proud at the weekend as the Sussex Junior Chess Grand Prix season came to an end in Worthing. Adam Rafael Holmes participated in the Under-18 Major for the first time and lost only two games out of six. He gained three draws and a win. This was enough to secure him two prizes – a grading award for performance on the day and second place in the year-long age competition, for him the Under-13s. He took home cash, a medal for achieving at least five grand prix in the season and a hologram rook inside a perspex case for his second place prize.
In the Under-18 Minor, Vishal Leo Thomas scored 3/6 - an excellent result for his first tournament. In the Under-11 Minor, Dominic Bourdaire scored 3.5, a great result, too. Rahul Leo Thomas scored a highly creditable 2.5. He accepted a draw in his third game though he was up Q+R v Q+P+P - victory would have given him3/3. In round 4 he played the eventual 6/6 winner.
MAY 17: The combined Chichester/Bognor team has won the Cole Cup Plate. They beat Fareham B 3.5-1.5. MAY 5: Bognor/Chichester B team finished their season in style with a resounding 3.5-1.5 victory at Emsworth. Division 2 proved very evenly contested this season, with the teams finishing second, third and fourth separated by just one point. Results: 1. Peter Dallas 0 - 1 Tom Howeson; 2. MAY 2: Adam Holmes had an extremely successful day in Leatherhead at the weekend at the Surrey Megafinal Under 13-18 mixed tournament. Rated 13/45, he swept to seventh place with a tremendous score of 4.5/6. It means he goes through to the Gigafinals in July. Details
APRIL 25: Congratulations to Jaimie Wilson, who has, once again, won the club championship. With a 100 per cent record of 16 wins from 16 games, he can't be caught for the title of club champion. Table
APRIL 25: Fareham have agreed to host a 10-board match between the winners of the Southampton League and the Portsmouth League - Chichester/Bognor - the first inter-league match for many years. Steve Smith will captain the Chichester/Bognor team for the match, to be played at Fareham on June 21.
APRIL 8: We have heard the sad news that Reg Gyening, who was a member of the club during the 2019-20 season, has died. Reg, who suffered a heart attack, only played at Bognor for a short while but impressed with his strong play.
APRIL 5: Chichester/Bognor are in the Cole Cup Plate final after a 3-2 away win against Fareham. They will play either Emsworth A or Fareham B in the final. MARCH 21: We had three club players competing in the Fareham Chess Congress at the weekend. Adam Holmes did exceptionally well in the Minor. Having taken two byes, he drew two of this matches and won the other two, meaning he gained 4/6 points, and was undefeated. Luigi Caste, a previous Minor winner, took part in the Major this time and lost to a 1800 player in the first round. He then enjoyed a super Saturday, with two draws and a win. Unfortunately, he lost his two Sunday games, against slightly higher rated players. Alan Matthews found the going a bit tougher, finishing on 1.5/6.

FEBRUARY 7: Adam Holmes enjoyed tremendous success at the Horsham Grand Prix at the weekend - winning the Under 18 Minor trophy, having achieved a terrific score of 5/6. Not only that, one of Bognor's newest players, Dominic Bourdaire, in the u11 Minor section, scored a well deserved 3.5/6. John Hargreaves was present to see his grandson, Neo, get in on the act too, gaining 2/6.

SEPTEMBER 26: The club's annual meeting and presentations ceremony takes place at The Bognor Club on Friday, September 30, when plans for the forthcoming season are discussed. SEPTEMBER 20: Jamie Wood has very kindly, and methodically, transcribed the list of previous holders of the Knockout tournament, stretching back to 1948. Older members will recall many familiar names from the past, including Mandy Hepworth, Reg Jackson, a former secretary, and the two Christmases - Peter and Paul. Some of the names are a bit unclear - and there is also a "doubling up" for 1984 so if anyone spots any errors let us know so they can be corrected. Honours board

SEPTEMBER 3: Jaimie Wilson has clinched the "club double", defeating Mike Spence in the club's Knockout Tournament. This followed his 100% 17/17 success in the club championship, which clinched him the title.

JUNE 28: The first few games have been played in the club's Summer Tournament, being run by Jaimie Wilson. Players will be rewarded with points according to the quality of their opponent. Games will count for grading. Details
JUNE 21: Bognor players Jaimie Wilson, Mike Spence, Rob Harrison and Adam Holmes helped make up a Chichster/Bognor select team which played Fareham - Southampton League champions v Portsmouth League winners. But the team found the going tough, going down 10-2. Mike salvaged a point against Ted Black.
JUNE 4: The club's East Preston Festival Chess Challenge was back ... after a three-year absence due to Covid. Club members Jaimie Wilson, Bill Partridge, Adam Raphael Holmes and Mike Spence hosted visitors to the Tudor Tavern, together with Chichester Chess Club chairman Steve Smith. Also joining the fun were former Bognor members Celia Buckley and Terry Peffer. Seven boards were kept busy throughout the morning. MAY 29: This coming Saturday, the club is holding its popular chess challenge as part of East Preston Festival. It's the chance for members of the public to take us on at chess. It's at a new venue this year, the Tutor Tavern, 138-140 Sea Rd, East Preston, BN16 1NN. The evn on Saturday, June 4, between 10am and 12 noon. We’ve got the courtyard out front but if the weather takes a turn for the worse, we can either go inside or utilise the back garden, which is under cover. There’s usually free on-road parking spaces and a car park opposite. It’s has been plenty of fun in the past so make a note of it in your diary!
MAY 22: The club’s juniors did Bognor and Arun proud at the weekend as the Sussex Junior Chess Grand Prix season came to an end in Worthing. Adam Rafael Holmes participated in the Under-18 Major for the first time and lost only two games out of six. He gained three draws and a win. This was enough to secure him two prizes – a grading award for performance on the day and second place in the year-long age competition, for him the Under-13s. He took home cash, a medal for achieving at least five grand prix in the season and a hologram rook inside a perspex case for his second place prize.
In the Under-18 Minor, Vishal Leo Thomas scored 3/6 - an excellent result for his first tournament. In the Under-11 Minor, Dominic Bourdaire scored 3.5, a great result, too. Rahul Leo Thomas scored a highly creditable 2.5. He accepted a draw in his third game though he was up Q+R v Q+P+P - victory would have given him3/3. In round 4 he played the eventual 6/6 winner.
MAY 17: The combined Chichester/Bognor team has won the Cole Cup Plate. They beat Fareham B 3.5-1.5. MAY 5: Bognor/Chichester B team finished their season in style with a resounding 3.5-1.5 victory at Emsworth. Division 2 proved very evenly contested this season, with the teams finishing second, third and fourth separated by just one point. Results: 1. Peter Dallas 0 - 1 Tom Howeson; 2. MAY 2: Adam Holmes had an extremely successful day in Leatherhead at the weekend at the Surrey Megafinal Under 13-18 mixed tournament. Rated 13/45, he swept to seventh place with a tremendous score of 4.5/6. It means he goes through to the Gigafinals in July. Details
APRIL 25: Congratulations to Jaimie Wilson, who has, once again, won the club championship. With a 100 per cent record of 16 wins from 16 games, he can't be caught for the title of club champion. Table
APRIL 25: Fareham have agreed to host a 10-board match between the winners of the Southampton League and the Portsmouth League - Chichester/Bognor - the first inter-league match for many years. Steve Smith will captain the Chichester/Bognor team for the match, to be played at Fareham on June 21.
APRIL 8: We have heard the sad news that Reg Gyening, who was a member of the club during the 2019-20 season, has died. Reg, who suffered a heart attack, only played at Bognor for a short while but impressed with his strong play.
APRIL 5: Chichester/Bognor are in the Cole Cup Plate final after a 3-2 away win against Fareham. They will play either Emsworth A or Fareham B in the final. MARCH 24: It was a terrific performance by the Chichester/Bognor B team in their away match at Fareham. Outgraded on the top three boards, they fought out a 2-5-2.5 draw. MARCH 21: We had three club players competing in the Fareham Chess Congress at the weekend. Adam Holmes did exceptionally well in the Minor. Having taken two byes, he drew two of this matches and won the other two, meaning he gained 4/6 points, and was undefeated. Luigi Caste, a previous Minor winner, took part in the Major this time and lost to a 1800 player in the first round. He then enjoyed a super Saturday, with two draws and a win. Unfortunately, he lost his two Sunday games, against slightly higher rated players. Alan Matthews found the going a bit tougher, finishing on 1.5/6.

FEBRUARY 7: Adam Holmes enjoyed tremendous success at the Horsham Grand Prix at the weekend - winning the Under 18 Minor trophy, having achieved a terrific score of 5/6. Not only that, one of Bognor's newest players, Dominic Bourdaire, in the u11 Minor section, scored a well deserved 3.5/6. John Hargreaves was present to see his grandson, Neo, get in on the act too, gaining 2/6.

JANUARY 24: The club is holding a 10-minute Blitz tournament on March 4, organised by Jamie Wood, helped by Tracey Holmes. It will be a five-round Swiss-style tournament. The evening will start at 7.15pm prompt. Please advise Jamie if you would like to participate, though entries will be accepted on the night.
JANUARY 22: Jaimie Wilson played top board for the Sussex team against Kent. He came up against Irish IM Conor Murphy, graded 2517, who beat Jaimie, 2194, but two wins in the final two games enabled Sussex to hold a Kent side, which out-graded Sussex on every board, to a highly creditable draw.
