NOVEMBER 20: Andrew McDougall's fine win and an excellent draw by Mike Spence were the highlights of a 4.5-1.5 reverse for Chichester/Bognor A's away to Farnham. Bill McDougall, Jaimie Wilson, Keith Davies and Lara Osiyemi all lost.
NOVEMBER 11: Chichester/Bognor B lost 3.5-1.5 to a very strong Gosport team in division 2. There was a fine win for Ian Judd against Martin Newbury and an excellent draw for Bill Partridge. The team's cause was not helped by travel problems, leading to the late arrival of two players.
NOVEMBER 8: Emsworth beat Chichester/Bognor D 3.5-1.5, but there were some spirited displays by our team. Result: 1. Keir Eyles 1-0 Rafael Harbour; 2. Zoltan Zagonyi 0-1 Philip Wake; 3. N. Parekh .5 Ian Richardson; 4. David Jerome 1-0 Philip Juleff; 5. Stephen Barron 1-0 Bill Ingram. OCTOBER 20: Chichester/Bognor B team won their opening division 2 match against Emsworth B in remarkable fashion. Missing Steve Smith, Bill Partridge and Ian Judd, and facing opponents graded 176 and 162 on the top two boards, Chi/Bognor won 3-2. Ian Schreiber was first to finish, with a tidy win against D.Jerome, to put us 1-0 up. Mike Spence looked comfortable in a Modern, but fell victim to an unlucky fork following a check, which put us 1-1. Mick Plumb had a 78-move (!) win against Derek Shotton, which made the score 2-1 to us. But both Keith and Lara looked vulnerable, having to face rearguard actions - both opponents having advanced connected pawns, Lara being three pawns down in a rook/knight end game. With the clocks running down, Keith's brilliantly timed draw offer was accepted, meaning we couldn't lose the match. And then, remarkably, Lara's expert play chipped away at his opponent's initiative to secure a draw. So 3-2 to us. Result: L Osiyemi .5 C Gilliam; K Davies .5 K Eyles; M Plumb 1 D Shotton 0; I Schreiber 1 D Jerome 0; M Spence 0 N Parekh 1.
