2012
DECEMBER 7: Bognor/Chichester B lost their away match v Cosham B 2.5-3.5. There were wins for Ray Hunt and Mick Plumb and a draw for Alex Miller, but losses against stronger-graded opponents for Bill Partridge, Keith Davies and Cliff Cropp.
DECEMBER 1: Players are advised to arrive no earlier than 7.15pm this coming Friday club night (December 7) as The Bognor Club is holding its annual meeting earlier in the evening.
NOVEMBER 30: Andrew Keil was the only winner in Chichester/Bognor C team’s home match with Portsmouth C. But we still ran out 4-2 winners - thanks to two defaults and two draws by Ray Hunt and Alex Miller. Mick Plumb lost against Simon Roberts. Ray’s game had an extraordinary finish - his opponent failing to see Ray’s flag had fallen, only for his own to fall later and the game declared a draw!
NOVEMBER 13: Bognor and Arun Chess Club were just thwarted in their match away to Horsham Chess Club in the Paul Watson Trophy competition, reports Keith Davies. Individual results were as follows (grades in brackets ):
Board 1 Jaimie Wilson (185) beat Peter Harbott (168) - a complicated game by Jaimie, who restricted his opponent to impotent moves by taking control of the whole board.
Board 2 Keith Davies (143) lost to Mick Harris (151) - both had only seconds to make several moves to reach the time control but unfortunately, Keith's flag fell first.
Board 3 Cliff Cropp (129) lost to Richard Moorhouse (135) - an oversight by Cliff meant he lost a bishop early on and resigned in disgust.
Board 4 Mick Plumb (119) beat Ron Fletcher (130) - an illegal move was missed by both players and after playing on for several moves, Mick's opponent resigned !
The match stood at 2-2, also equal on board count. However, Horsham won 2-1 on board elimination after the result of the bottom board was eliminated. A fair result considering the average grade of the Horsham team was 146, compared with our 144.
An interesting and eventful evening. Firstly, we took a wrong turning, causing a lengthy detour but still managed to arrive in time. Secondly, someone knocked Keith's coffee cup all over his table, creating a minor tsunami (did this cause him to waste precious seconds?) Then, we had the illegal move situation on Board 4. Then, on the way to the car, in the dark, Keith tripped over a small wall, fortunately only suffering a minor scrape to his leg and wounding his pride. Finally, and amazingly, we were home earlier than if we had been playing at Bognor Chess Club!
