DECEMBER 30: Bognor are gearing up for their McArthur Cup clash with St Francis & Haywards Heath, to be played at The Bognor Club on Friday, January 13. The winners go through to a semi-final encounter with Hastings & St Leonards. Captain Bill Partridge has named the other players in his line-up: Jaimie Wilson, Cliff Cropp, Keith Davies, Ray Hunt and Mick Plumb.
DECEMBER 15: A strong-looking C team came up against a similarly well graded Portsmouth C team...and ended up on the wrong side of a 4-2 scoreline. There were victories for Mick Plumb and Alex Miller.
NOVEMBER 29: Chichester/Bognor enjoyed their most decisive Portsmouth League win of the season with a thumping C team victory, 5.5-.5, away to Fareham C.
NOVEMBER 23: The division two clash between Chichester/Bognor B and Cosham B ended with our team winning 4-2. Mick Plumb won his adjourned game against Steve LeFevre, meaning it’s three wins out of three for the division two team.
NOVEMBER 15: Chichester/Bognor B maintained their unbeaten start to their division two campaign against Cosham B, at the Wickham Arms. There were impressive wins for Ray Hunt and John Kalber, draws for Ray Williams and Cliff Cropp, with just the one defeat, for Keith Davies. Mick Plumb’s game is unfinished but with three points, Chichester/Bognor have at least drawn the match.

OCTOBER 1: The club’s summer tournament has finished...and the battle for the club championship has begun. Winner of section A was Keith Davies with 17 points. Mick Plumb won section B, and was second overall, with 11 points, John Kalber was third overall, with 7.5 points, and Mike Spence won section C, with 7 points. Thirteen players took part.
SEPTEMBER 28: The club’s fixtures for this season’s Portsmouth League campaign have been announced. The div one and two teams - combined with Chichester - play their home games at The Wickham Arms, Chichester, with the third team, under new captain Mike Spence, playing home fixtures at The Bognor Club.
SEPTEMBER 5: Players have until the end of this month to participate in the summer tournament - the deadline for games has been extended to September 30. Current, qualified, leaders are: Keith Davies, 16 points; Mick Plumb, 11; John Kalber, 7.5; Mike Spence, 7. Others competing near the top are: Jaimie Wilson, 12 points, 2 more opponents to play; Phillip Wake, 9, 2 more opponents to play; Bill Partridge, 7, 1 more opponent to play).
SEPTEMBER 5: Jaimie Wilson has won the 2011 half-hour Rapidplay tournament, with 3/3. The Club Championship has started in the format of an all-play-all of 14 players, subject to being a paid-up member. Subs are now due for the year ahead.
AUGUST 26: Jaimie Wilson demonstrated his strengths as club champion as he won a 11-game simul against players 8-3, following the annual meeting. The only successful opponents were Cliff Cropp and Mike Spence, with Keith Davies and Philip Wake securing draws. Chairman Bill Partridge said the club had enjoyed a successful season, finishing second in division two and three of the Portsmouth League - jointly with Chichester - and third in a tough division one. The internal tournaments - run by Keith Davies and Donald Close - had gone smoothly, too. The club would enter a team in the McArthur Cup again next year, despite the strong opposition. Membership fees were to remain unchanged for another year, at £47.
AUGUST 22: Members can have a say about how their club is run on Friday, August 26, when the club holds its annual meeting. The AGM takes place at 7.30pm at the club’s premises, in Sudley Road, Bognor, followed by a simul against club champion Jaimie Wilson.
AUGUST 21: Jaimie Wilson won the club’s lightning tournament, entered by nine players. The blue digital clocks were utilised, being set for 15 seconds a move. Donald Close did an excellent job organising and controlling the tournament. Jaimie scored 9 1/2, Ray Hunt was second, with 7/12.
AUGUST 1: Jaimie Wilson keeps his place at the top of the club’s list of graded players, with a new 2011 grade of 179 - up from 176. But he’s closely pursued by Rolandas Lukosius, with a grade of 176.

JUNE 4: East Preston Chess Challenge is just a week away, being held 10am-12 noon on Saturday, June 11, again at the Penang Village restaurant. It’s a chance to play a few friendly chess games against each other - as well as visitors to the popular village festival.
JUNE 4: Bill Partridge has won the Ruth Rose Cup for his tremendous performances in the Portsmouth League during the season. He scored 6/7, giving him a 85.7% record. He was a clear winner, with Vince Agius of Emsworth finishing second on 71.4%. Keith Davies was equal seventh.
MAY 26: Bognor/Chichester B came up against a very strong Fareham side in the Cole Cup Plate final - and were soundly beaten 4-1. Captain Keith Davies highlighted the huge difference in grades: Board 1 - Ian Judd (160) 0 - 1 A. Corkett (196) 36; Board 2 - Keith Davies (143) 0 -1 H. MAY 18: Chichester/Bognor C team inflicted a magnificent 4-2 defeat of previously unbeaten Portsmouth B in division 3, helped by two defaults. Portsmouth B - runaway winners of division three - significantly outgraded the Chi/Bognor team.
MAY 9: This year’s East Preston Chess Challenge is 10am-12 noon on Saturday, June 11, again at the Penang Restaurant. It’s a chance to play a few friendly chess games against each other - as well as visitors to the popular village festival.

There were wins for Ray Williams (on time) and Mick Plumb, together with a draw by Keith Davies. Portsmouth finished the season with a maximum 16 points from eight matches. In the previous match, against Fareham B, Joe Coburn and Steve Smith have now agreed a draw, which meant Chichester/Bognor B won the match 3.5-2.5. The results see Chichester B finish second.
APRIL 30: The club championship is entering its final, dramatic phase, with Jaimie Wilson and Martin Shaw battling it out for the title. Jaimie’s victory over Ray Hunt means the title’s his if he defeats Andrew Keil in his final match. But if he slips up, Martin Shaw - who has Mick Plumb and Ray Hunt to play - can pounce.
APRIL 22: Chichester Chess Club - where many Bognor members also play - has a new venue. They move from The Fountain to The Wickham Arms on Wednesday, May 18. The Wickham Arms’ address is 102 Bognor Road, Chichester, PO19 2NW. From the A27, at the Bognor Road roundabout, take A259 towards the city centre. The Wickham Arms is a short distance along the Bognor Road, on the left-hand side, on the corner with York Road which, from the roundabout, is the third turning on the left. There is a small car park at the back of the pub and plenty of close-by on-street parking.

FEBRUARY 18: Chichester/Bognor C team pulled off an amazing 3½-2½ win away to a strong Cosham side. Wins by Philip Wake, Laszlo Sagi and Norman Bremner, plus a magnificent draw by Dave Mawson, when three pawns down in an end game, sealed the victory.
FEBRUARY 11: Chichester Chess Club is switching its club night at the Fountain from Tuesday (when music nights have been introduced at the pub) to Wednesday. Next week, Tuesday, February 15, will be the final Tuesday club night and chess will resume at the Fountain from Wednesday, February 23. Home matches are being rescheduled.

APRIL 2: Bognor/Chichester C had a convincing 4.5-1.5 win over Portsmouth C, helped by two defaults. There were over-the-board wins for Martin Shaw and Chris Gee, plus a draw from Celia Buckley.
MARCH 31:Bognor/Chichester B face a tough test if they are to retain the Cole Cup Plate. They face Fareham A in the final after winning their semi-final clash with Emsworth 3.5-1.5. There were victories for Ray Hunt, Mick Plumb and Mike Spence, plus a draw for Bill Partridge.
MARCH 11: Chichester/Bognor C team thumped Fareham C 5-1, which puts the team in second place in division three, headed by Portsmouth B. MARCH 10: Chichester/Bognor B look set to win their encounter with Fareham B. Steve Smith has at least a draw against J.Coburn in the only unfinished game in which Chi/Bognor stand 3-2. FEBRUARY 28: Jaimie Wilson led the way to help Sussex Under 180s to victory over Kent on Saturday - the first win by any of the four Sussex county teams this season. FEBRUARY 18: Chichester/Bognor C team pulled off an amazing 3½-2½ win away to a strong Cosham side. Wins by Philip Wake, Laszlo Sagi and Norman Bremner, plus a magnificent draw by Dave Mawson, when three pawns down in an end game, sealed the victory.
FEBRUARY 11: Chichester Chess Club is switching its club night at the Fountain from Tuesday (when music nights have been introduced at the pub) to Wednesday. Next week, Tuesday, February 15, will be the final Tuesday club night and chess will resume at the Fountain from Wednesday, February 23. Home matches are being rescheduled.
FEBRUARY 3: Bognor/Chichester B team beat a strong Emsworth B side 3½-2½ to keep alive their slim hopes of winning division two. There were wins for Ray Hunt and Mick Plumb, plus draws from Jaimie Wilson, Keith Davies and Bill Partridge. Steve Smith lost a tough game. Portsmouth lead the division with maximum points from their four matches but still have to go to Emsworth and play their return fixture with us. Bognor/Chichester lie second, two points behind, but have played one game more.
JANUARY 25: Philip Wake won his game in tight time conditions to draw the match between Chichester/Bognor C and Portsmouth C. There were also good wins for Dave Mawson and Andrew Keil.
JANUARY 23: Jaimie Wilson is facing a tough challenge to retain his championship title this season. The current standings are: Bill Partridge 10/11; Keith Davies 10/13; Jaimie Wilson 7.5/9; Mick Plumb 6.5/9; Martin Shaw 4/5; Laszlo Sagi 4/6.
JANUARY 21: Chichester/Bognor C team faced a highly graded Portsmouth B team in division three and lost out 4-2. Martin Shaw, on top board, was the only winner, with Mick Plumb and Laszlo Sagi achieving draws.
JANUARY 19: Bognor/Chichester A beat Fareham A 4-2 in the Portsmouth League to keep their title hopes alive.
JANUARY 14: Bognor were considerably outgraded against Brighton in the McCarthur Cup -as usual - but there were highly creditable draws for Martin Shaw and Jaimie Wilson, on top board. Brighton won 5-1.
