2002
DECEMBER 21, 2002: Bognor continues to have a major influence in the Portsmouth League, combining well with Chichester in divisions two and three. One of their best results so far was a thumping 6-0 away victory at Portsmouth in division three!
NOVEMBER 30, 2002: Five Bognor players took part in Sussex Under 125's match at Herts - but only one, Martin Eaves, was successful, drawing his game. Gary Cox, Kris Llewellyn, Mick Plumb and Philip Wake all lost in the team's 3½-12½ defeat. Sussex - with two wins out of three - are still well placed for qualifying for the national stages.
OCTOBER 25, 2002: Bognor got their South West Sussex league season off to a fantastic start - defeating Emsworth Eelers 4½-½. Robin Bavin, on top board, drew, and Keith Davies, Paul O'Brien, Mick Plumb and Gary Cox all won.
OCTOBER 17, 2002: Chichester won their opening Portsmouth League division three encounter at Cosham. They had a strong Bognor presence and two adjudications swung it Chichester's way.
OCTOBER12, 2002: Sussex Under 125 - boosted by three wins from Bognor trio Gary Cox, Philip Wake and Mick Plumb - won their opening match of the new season 9-7.
OCTOBER 4, 2002: The South West Sussex League's annual meeting was held at Bognor on Friday, October 4. Bognor's Donald Close was elected secretary/treasurer, replacing Nigel Pestelle and Bob Grundy, who stood down. Keith Davies organised a quick-play tournament afterwards, consisting of four teams. A team from Emsworth - having just received their trophy for winning the SWS League for 2001-02 - duly won this too!
SEPTEMBER, 2002: Two of Bognor's players competed in the Crowborough quick play tournament. Keith Davies lost only one game, but drew five of his six games to finish on two and a half points. Mick Plumb won three and lost three to finish on three points.
AUGUST, 2002: Bognor competed in the annual jamboree at Brighton - but did not fare too well. Bill Partridge won, Keith Davies drew, but Paul O'Brien, Mick Plumb, Gary Cox and Kris Llewlyn all lost.
MAY, 2002: Paul O''Brien is the club champion at Bognor. He won all his matches to secure the club title. The club's knockout tournament was also won by Paul. The half-hour tournament proved successful for Bill Partridge. The summer tournament held in summer 2002 was also won by Bill.
APRIL, 2002: The club had a poor season in the South West Sussex League, wrapping up its season at the end of April with a 3-2 reverse against Chichester. The year had begun promisingly, with victory by a similar scoreline against Rustington. But the team were severely weakened by the absence of last year's club champion, Reg Jackson, and the absence, for three months, of Bill Partridge. In The McCarthur Cup, Bognor lost 4-2 against Worthing and ½-5½ against Chichester. In the Mid Sussex League, Bognor opened with three straight wins. But then they lost three in a row! They entered the knockout tournament for the first time and after knocking out Aldrington House they faced a weak East Grinstead team. But because of the tournament's handicapping system, they had to win 5-1 to go through. But they lost 4-2! Next season, the club is joining forces with Chichester in the Portsmouth League.
APRIL, 2002: Two of the club's stalwarts continue to captain the Sussex Under 125 team. Captains Terry Peffer and Mick Plumb fared poorly though, winning only once despite putting out some strong sides. The youngsters did the county proud once again though and this bodes well for next season. Bognor players Gary Cox, Philip Wake and Donald Close all participated throughout the season.
