Result: B1 Tom Howeson 1-0 R Hartley; B2 Bill Emerson 0-1 A Smith; B3 Remmy Ramirez 1-0 P Jackson; B4 Steve Smith 1-0 M Atkins; B5 Steve Coe 1-0 P Mc Evoy. Commentary by captain Mike Spence: An evening of drama and excitement. This was a very tense close match right to the end. Tom was an exchange down for two pawns. He had to play very accurately to avoid a draw. Bill's game was fairly even but Andrew managed to get a passed pawn which swung it. Remmy played an amazing Caro Kahn with a kingside pawn storm, without castling! Steve’s game was very double-edged Queen's Gambit v Owens defence. He managed to get great counter play down the centre, having first set up a lovely defensive position against the strong white bishop. Steve Coe's game! He was completely winning, but Pat got some excellent counter play with a mating threat, forcing Steve into a losing position. Then, for the second time, Pat's phone went off, so we claimed a win. Maybe harsh but at the time the match was still very much in the balance. So I’m delighted to announce we have won the second division with a match in hand. Congratulations everyone. A truly great team effort against typically equal opposition.
